Are Bunions Genetic?
This is a question we hear from our patients, friends, and family ALL THE TIME.. and let me be clear. I love this question. Why? Because it opens up a conversation.
There are so many conditions out there that we used to believe were completely genetic, but it turns out it's a little more complicated than that. There are familial factors, epigenetics, but there are also environmental factors and lifestyle choices so let's set the record straight here.
Is there a genetic COMPONENT to bunions? Yes.
You can absolutely be at a higher risk of bunions if they are prevalent in your family because you likely have more flexibility in your joints. But, this doesn't mean that you are doomed to suffer the pain the of the family members that came before you.
Let's talk about what you CAN do to improve function, stop your bunions from progressing, or alleviate your pain:
Strengthen your feet and ankles
Your feet have hundreds of muscles, tendons and ligaments. They are complex structures and they absolutely can be strengthened just like the rest of your muscles. Oh... and I'm not just talking about towel grabs or marble picks up, there’s way more to foot strength than just those exercises. We want to target abductor hallucis (the muscle that pulls the big toe away from his smaller neighbors). We also want to help control movement in the transverse plane at the foot. Not sure what that means? That’s okay, that’s why I’m here to help!
Wear shoes that are shaped like feet
This is a no-brainer. If you wear shoes that are a pointed shape, your feet will contour to this shape. It was the case with foot binding, it was the case with whalebone corsets, and it's still the case with narrow toed shoes. If you look at your shoes, whether they are running shoes, stilletos, or flats, and they have a tapered shape at the toe they are not ideal. There are more and more options out there that offer a wide toe box and we'd be happy to help you find the right shoe for you.
So to recap, although genetics can put your at higher risk for bunions there is hope! With some TLC, the proper footwear, and a little bit of muscle your feet can take you wherever you want to go!
